Throwback Thursday – Photos of My First Trip to London

This post is an exercise in embarrassment and reflection.  Ever look back at photos of yourself with confusion and anger sprinkled in with a bit of humor?  Well I found my old photos from my first trip abroad when I was just a wee undergraduate who had to try his best to look ambivalent in all his photos because I heard girls like that. Anyway…London … Continue reading Throwback Thursday – Photos of My First Trip to London

Tui Brewery, New Zealand – Pants Required?

New Zealand gives some good brewery tours.  Now, Tui Brewery was my second tour in the country and it had a high bar to fill after the Speight’s tour I took.  It succeeded admirably. This tour was less of a historical lesson like Speight’s and more of a fun, whimsical, tongue-in-cheek Hooters knockoff.  Their website gives off that vibe pretty well. Our guide was absolutely a … Continue reading Tui Brewery, New Zealand – Pants Required?

North Korean Tourism Brochures/Propaganda Translated – Part 1

So as I mentioned in an earlier post I have the honor of being in possession of some North Korean Tourism/Propaganda pamphlets.  I just got the first batch of them translated and if you have ever been curious what gets said in something like that here you are!  Side Note:  I’m not completely sure the pictures posted coincide with the translated pages properly as this … Continue reading North Korean Tourism Brochures/Propaganda Translated – Part 1

Shanghai Tower – As Viewed Through Dirty Glass

I’m going to be completely honest here because it isn’t a terribly offensive position.  Shanghai isn’t a great tourist city.  I mean, there’s some weird stuff to eat(As does everywhere in China) and it has a pretty sweet skyline but that was really about all I could find that was terribly unique. Arguments could be made about some unique museums and exhibits but those aren’t … Continue reading Shanghai Tower – As Viewed Through Dirty Glass

An Update – I’m Getting Propaganda Translated and My Trips Keep Getting Cancelled…so…a Mixed Bag

The featured photo is from a photoshoot I recently did while bored, much like this post. I just received word officially that the trip I was planning in April to Cameroon has been cancelled due to potential Civil War.  I mean I will grant that is a solid reason and I will keep that in my back pocket as the best excuse I have had … Continue reading An Update – I’m Getting Propaganda Translated and My Trips Keep Getting Cancelled…so…a Mixed Bag

Dujiangyan Panda Hugs and Forgery – A Story of Moral Dilemmas

I need to start by saying I wasn’t sure if I should even tell this story. It could be considered offensive to some for a variety of reasons. Then I decided I would be doing a disservice to everyone, myself included, by not. So in Chengdu there’s 4 Panda bases and we made a plan to visit 2 of them to snap a few pictures, … Continue reading Dujiangyan Panda Hugs and Forgery – A Story of Moral Dilemmas

Leshan Giant Buddha in Photos. I Forgot to Bring a Banana for Scale…

While in Chengdu early this year we took a day trip south to Leshan to see the Giant Buddha.  It’s one of the largest in the world and I believe the largest sitting Buddha statue at just over 70 meters tall.  It cost 100 RMB to enter the park where you also have access to the temple and various walkways that have smaller statues, caves, … Continue reading Leshan Giant Buddha in Photos. Upcoming Trips and Musings – The Best Way to Recover From Jetlag is to Book Another Vacation

So this case of jetlag after coming back from China has been rough so that’s as good a reason as any to do a post.  The next few weeks will be posts about the major stuff in China we did including giant Buddhas, medical forgery, and midnight drunken strolls.  However first, a few extra pics from China that are just mildly entertaining with some bonus … Continue reading Upcoming Trips and Musings – The Best Way to Recover From Jetlag is to Book Another Vacation
